Job Description
About Helix
Helix Asset Management is a Perth-based maintenance and asset management consultancy firm working with mining and civil operations across WA. We build the systems, standards, and documentation that keep equipment running and maintenance teams operating with clarity. We work across mobile and fixed plant environments, and we take our technical documentation seriously — because good documents save lives and reduce cost.
The Role
We're looking for experienced SME Document Writers to support Helix clients in the development and uplift of maintenance and operational documentation across mobile and fixed plant assets. This is a technical writing role — you'll be translating hands-on knowledge into clear, accurate, and usable documents that frontline teams will actually rely on.
You might be coming from a trade or engineering background and have developed a skill for writing, or you might be an experienced technical writer who has spent significant time embedded in mining maintenance environments.
What You'll Be Doing
Developing and uplifting maintenance procedures, work instructions, and task-based SOPs for mobile and fixed plant equipment
Working with site SMEs (tradespersons, supervisors, engineers) to capture and structure technical knowledge into compliant documentation
Writing and reviewing Planned Maintenance (PM) schedules, inspection checklists, and equipment-specific task lists
Producing or updating critical control procedures, isolation and LOTO documentation, and pre-start inspection forms
Ensuring documents meet client standards frameworks (ISO 55000, client-specific templates, site safety management systems)
Formatting and publishing documents into client CMMS or document management systems (SAP, Pronto, Maximo, SharePoint or similar)
Supporting the development of onboarding and competency assessment documents for maintenance roles
Reviewing existing document libraries and identifying gaps, duplications, or outdated content
Coordinating SME review cycles and managing document version control
What We're Looking For
Non-negotiables:
Trade qualification or engineering background in a heavy industry discipline (Heavy Diesel, Fitting, Electrical, Instrumentation, or similar) — OR proven technical writing experience with substantial mining maintenance exposure
Minimum 5 years working in or closely alongside mining maintenance operations
Demonstrated experience writing technical maintenance documentation — procedures, SOPs, work instructions, or equivalent
Strong grasp of maintenance management principles — you understand what a PM is for, not just how to format one
High attention to detail and ability to write clearly and concisely for a frontline audience
Comfortable working independently, managing your own review cycles and deadlines
Highly regarded:
Formal qualifications or training in technical writing or instructional design
Experience with document management systems and controlled document workflows
Familiarity with asset management standards (ISO 55000, PAS 55)
Exposure to both mobile plant (haul trucks, drills, dozers, graders) and fixed plant (crushers, conveyors, processing equipment)
Experience writing critical control procedures or bowtie-aligned documentation
Background with Tier 1 or Tier 2 mining operators (BHP, Rio, MRL, Newmont, etc.)
What Makes This Different
Helix works with clients who need documentation that is technically accurate, operationally practical, and built to be used — not filed away. You'll be working alongside people who have come from the trade and superintendent level, so there's no need to over-explain the context.
We offer flexibility in how the work is delivered. Depending on the engagement, this may be fully remote, Perth office-based, or involve periodic site visits for SME consultation. We're outcome-focused — we care about the quality of the documents, not where you're sitting when you write them.
The Practical Stuff
Remote, Perth-based, or hybrid delivery depending on project requirements
Contract (day rate) or ongoing engagement structures available
Work across a variety of client sites and asset types — no two projects are the same
Competitive rates negotiated based on experience and technical depth
Opportunity for long-term pipeline of work as Helix grows its client base
How to Apply
If you've got the site background and the writing ability to match, we'd like to hear from you. Send us your resume and a brief description of the types of documents you've written and the environments you've worked in
Pay: $55,336.09 – $119,283.21 per year
Work Location: Hybrid remote in Perth WA
