Description

The Department of Medical Genetics in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Data Technician. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

Reporting to the Program Manager.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Clinical and research data support
Enter and curate patient-level data extracted from electronic medical records into secure research databases
Perform quality checks to ensure accuracy, completeness, and consistency of entered data
Assist with data cleaning and preliminary analysis of data pulls used for healthcare utilization and cost analyses
Help maintain audit trails and documentation for data processes
Data Preparation and basic technical skills

Format, clean, and organize datasets for genomic, transcriptomic, and proteomic analyses
Prepare files, metadata, and directory structures for downstream analysis by genome analysts
Move and manage large data files within an online research data cluster accessed via command line. Conduct basic scripting or coding tasks (e.g., data parsing, transforming file formats, automating routine steps)
Research Computing & Cluster Support

Upload, organize, and verify files on the research data cluster
Run simple command-line operations and follow established protocols for data transfer and storage
Troubleshoot minor issues with file paths, permissions, and data organization under supervision
General Laboratory & Project Support

Maintain clear documentation of workflows and procedures
Work collaboratively with clinical research coordinators, genome analysts, and trainees
Participate in regular team meetings and training sessions
Qualifications / Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalent. An undergraduate degree or equivalent is an asset
Junior software developer or equivalent role 2 years minimum (required)
Experience working with Linux command line or secure computing clusters (asset)
Experience with data entry or data management in a research, clinical, or technical setting (asset)
Familiarity with spreadsheets, REDCap, or other research data systems (asset)
Exposure to large datasets or basic data analysis tasks (asset)
Coding experience (self-taught, coursework, or practical use acceptable)
Basic knowledge of one or more programming or scripting languages (e.g., Python or similar)
Comfort with command-line interfaces (Windows, MacOS, or Linux)
Ability to learn new tools, software, and research workflows
Support research initiatives by developing and maintaining robust software systems and APIs for data collection, analysis, and reporting
Experience with coding and command line interface
Strong problem-solving skills
Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
