Financial Analyst


Summary: This financial analyst works closely with other financial professionals within the office and across colleges and administrative units in the performance of analysis pertinent to implementing and managing the detailed budget of the university. This position provides financial and analytical expertise to support budgeting, planning, and institutional decision-making. Key responsibilities include financial analysis, modeling, reporting, and the review of financial trends and budget/activity drivers. The financial analyst responds to budget-related and other financial planning questions and reviews financial information for the purpose of supporting decision-making bodies. In addition to interpreting policy and guidelines, this position provides counsel regarding budget and other financial planning practices.

The financial analyst supports initiatives to improve processes and systems used in the development, monitoring, and reporting of the university’s budget and other financial planning activities. This includes multi-year financial planning, annual financial forecasts, and other assigned projects.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Consults with colleges and unit representatives, and central offices in the development, analysis, and implementation of the university’s annual budget and multi-year financial plans.
Assists with maintaining annual budgets and multi-year financial plans throughout the year, including periodic updates to reflect approved resource allocation decisions during the year, reviewing for alignment to approved budget frameworks.
Provides financial expertise to internal decision-making bodies, identifying financial, operational and strategic impacts of projects or initiatives as well as synergies and risks in relation to institutional imperatives, projects or processes.
Monitors actual expenditures against budget, analyzes results, investigates variances, compiles forecasts for the year, and prepares reports.
Collaborates with administrative units to update annual and multi-year projections for operational changes, including major changes in revenue and expenditure assumptions.
Provides input on policy and process changes that promote accountability, financial responsibility and the efficient utilization of resources as well as enhance financial internal controls and the usability of financial reports.
Provides input on the development of internal standards for documentation of annual budget and other financial planning information and decisions, and adheres to those standards.
Drafts and provides input on training, communication and presentation materials informing the campus community on budget and other financial initiatives, policy, or procedural issues.
Provides timely advice and interpretation on matters relating to the budget and other financial items.
Represents the unit on assigned committees and projects.
Communicates and acts in a respectful and professional manner, collaborates effectively, abides by policy, and contributes to a positive and productive work and learning environment.
Engages in continuous learning by participating in activities, training, and events related to Indigenous engagement, reconciliation, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Demonstrates respect and dignity for all members of the community, actively contributes to an environment of acceptance and inclusion of others, and responds to different perspectives from a place of curiosity, respect, and non-judgement.
Undertakes related duties, as assigned, consistent with the nature of the position.
Qualifications:

A bachelor’s degree in commerce, business, accounting or related field.
A professional accounting designation would be considered an asset.
Minimum five years’ experience with budgeting, financial planning and analysis, general accounting, and financial management.
Ability to research and analyze large volumes of financial and numeric data.
Strong organizational, project management, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Highly developed written and verbal communication, and interpersonal skills.
Resilience and adaptability to evolving work environments, processes, and strategies.
Ability to manage competing demands and prioritize work to meet deadlines.
High level of professional judgment, confidentiality, and creativity.
Ability to work effectively both independently and in a diverse and inclusive team environment.
Experience working with business information technology tools, specifically Banner Finance (UniFi), is an asset.
Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office applications.

Salary: The salary range, based on 1.0 FTE, is $71,08+.00 - 117,5+2.00 per annum. The starting salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
