Please note: It is anticipated that this position will transition to the new Alberta Sheriffs Police Service at a future date.

Role Responsibilities
Reporting to the Executive Director, Finance, Procurement and Facilities, the Director, Finance provides strategic leadership, financial governance, and stewardship for all ASPS financial management functions. This position is accountable for establishing and overseeing financial frameworks that enable ASPS’s financial resources to be managed transparently, sustainably, and in alignment with operational policing requirements.

The Director leads enterprise‑wide finance functions including budget development, financial reporting, internal controls, audit coordination, risk management, and financial policy development. The role influences ASPS financial practices to meet Crown corporation accountability standards while supporting operational agility during the organization’s transition from a Government of Alberta branch to a standalone Crown corporation.

Job Responsibilities

Establish enterprise-wide financial governance and decision-making frameworks aligned with Crown corporation accountability requirements.
Provide strategic financial counsel to executive leadership on resource allocation, risk management, and long-term sustainability.
Lead the development and communication of the organization’s financial narrative, ensuring complex financial positions are clearly articulated, well-supported, and defensible to executive leadership, government, and external stakeholders.
Implement budgetary controls and financial monitoring processes to ensure fiscal discipline and accountability.
Oversee the preparation of accurate, timely financial reports in compliance with public-sector accounting standards.
Provide assurance to executive leadership on the effectiveness of financial controls and regulatory compliance.
Coordinate financial operations across procurement, fleet, facilities, IT, and operational leadership functions.
Represent ASPS in financial governance forums, interagency initiatives, and broader public-sector finance engagements.

Qualifications
Qualifications

Required:

A University graduation in a field related to the position assignment, supplemented by five years progressively responsible experience.
CPA or equivalent financial leadership experience in complex organizations. Non-traditional backgrounds with demonstrated financial leadership, system-building and executive advisory experience will be considered.
Related experience or education may be considered as an equivalency on a one for one basis.


Assets:

Knowledge of accounting, financial management and reporting theories and concepts including Generally Accepted Auditing Standards.
Knowledge of public sector accounting and auditing standards and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
Knowledge of relevant accounting standards, legislation, regulations and policies, specifically the Financial Administration Act, and Sustainable Fiscal Planning.
Knowledge of Government of Alberta business and fiscal planning processes and procedures and knowledge of the budgeting and forecasting principles and procedures.

Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8:15am to 4:30pm, 36.25 hours per week
