Job Description

As part of the Department of Internal Affairs, we are the kaitiaki of Aotearoa’s documentary heritage. At Archives New Zealand and the National Library, we care for the records, stories, and knowledge that shape who we are as a nation. We collect, protect, and provide appropriate access to everything from government records to treasured taonga, working with communities, libraries, and archives across the motu and beyond to make sure the history and information that matter remain accessible for generations to come.

Projects That Make a Lasting Impact on Aotearoa’s Archives

E ngā mana, e ngā reo, e ngā karangatanga maha o ngā hau e whā, nau mai, haere mai. Greetings to the many authorities, voices, and experts of the world.

As an Archivist - Project Delivery, you’ll contribute to and deliver high-impact projects that support the care, arrangement and accessibility of collections across Archives New Zealand. This role is ideal for someone who thrives on structure, problem-solving and working across teams to manage the large-scale transfer and processing of archival material.

You’ll join a small team of archivists working on regional and national priorities, ensuring projects are delivered to the highest standards. You’ll also collaborate with other specialists to ensure collections are appraised and described appropriately, and that physical and intellectual control is maintained throughout.

What we’re looking for

You’ll bring a strong mix of professional knowledge and project delivery experience, including:

Experience working in archives, records, or related heritage environments
A good understanding of archival description, arrangement, appraisal and storage best practice
Familiarity with the Public Records Act 2005 and related legislation
Stakeholder engagement skills and the ability to build relationships across institutions
An understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and a commitment to ensuring archives are managed in a way that reflects Crown–Māori relationships
Excellent organisational and problem-solving skills
You may also bring experience working with taonga, mātauranga Māori, and iwi or hapū partners in a cultural heritage or information management context.
